Ilya's memories of the visit

When I think back to the many memories that I have of the trip, I remember quite fondly the session we had for the Shabbat. This program brought together two different friends those that had known eacho other for quite some time and the very new friends me had newly met from America. During this event, I immediately felt myself part of a larger Jewish family. In the Dnepropetrovsk Hillel, the students like to call Olga (the director of Dnepropetrovsk Hillel), our "mother," because she brings so many different people with so many different lives together, and makes us one big family. My memories of that Shabbat are filled with many different sounds and images: the candles being lit, the sounds of the blessing over the wine and Challah. All of a sudden, everyone is embracing with hands joined, singing "Hine matovu manaim", and everyone is smiling shining so brightly. For me personally, being within the company of students from two countries was very significant. Furthermore, I received invaluable practice in speaking the English language, as well as learning "how the American students live," and finding that they share so many common interests and opinions with us.

During one of our last sessions as a group, I wanted very much to see the ‘connected circle’ of both Hillel's. By setting up a map of the most important events in our lives, we all learned how similar we were to each other. Despite the differences in age, attitudes, and language, I know that we (as a group and as individuals) have kept the light and soul of the Jewish people bright within us, and that is what so strongly unites us all. I would like to especially thank those who organized and implemented this project, Olga Tovkach, Ed Rosenthal, Inna Yampolskoy, and Naomi Sage. This trip has done very important things, primarily by bringing all of us together as a group and giving us the opportunity to merge the universal Jewish soul (within each of us) even though we (Jews from all over the world) have been separated for so long.

- В связи с сессией, я присоединился к поекту на Шабат, где собрались далекие, но в то же время очень близкие друзья, ребята и девушки Гилель-Днепр и Гилель-Корнэлл. Я сразу же почувстовал себя в большой еврейской семье, «мамой» которой стала директор Днепропетровского Гилеля Оля Товкач.
И вот свечи зажжены. Звучит благословение на вино. Затем – на халы. Дальше – все обнявшись пояют «Хине матов уманаим», сияют улыбки.
Для меня лично встреча ребят и девушек из Гилелей двух стран имела большое значение. Я получил неоценимый опыт общения на английском языке, возможность узнать, «чем живет» еврейская молодежь Нью-Йорка, что ей интересно, найти общие интересы и взгляды, друзей.
Очень важным был для меня круглый стол, когда каждый из участников проекта отметил на временной карте два самых главных в его жизни события. Оказалось, мы все очень похожи. Несмотря на различие в возрасте, взглядах и языке, мы храним свет еврейского народа в душе, и именно это является для нас самым главным и близким, тем, что нас объединяет.
Спасибо большое всем, кто участвовал в организации и воплощении в жизнь проекта, в первую очередь, Оле Товкач, Еду Розенталь, Инне Ямпольской, Наоми Сэйдж.
Ведь это так важно – объединять. Объединять родственные еврейские души, так долго находившиеся в разлуке.
